By promoting its interim CEO to the permanent role, Rugby Europe has prioritized organizational stability at a moment when the sport’s European governance structures face growing pressure to align with World Rugby’s strategic agenda

Rugby Europe has confirmed Jens Aage Skare Nielsen as its full-time Chief Executive Officer, ending an eight-month interim arrangement that began when Nielsen stepped in to stabilize the organization ahead of a formal search.

The appointment follows a competitive international recruitment process. Nielsen prevailed over external candidates. For Rugby Europe, the hire settles a leadership question that had lingered as the sport’s governance structures in the region face pressure to modernize.

Nielsen comes to the permanent role with an unusual professional mix. His core career, with more than 20 years at A.P. Moller – Maersk, the Danish shipping and logistics conglomerate, gave him experience scaling complex, multi-stakeholder organizations across geographies. His most recent position as Regional Partnership Manager at World Rugby placed him at the interface between the global governing body and its European member unions.

Nielsen also brings playing experience to the role. A former Danish international with 28 caps, he earned his first at 31. He has also founded a club and served as a union president.

The strategic priorities Nielsen has outlined for the role are broadly consistent with what Rugby Europe’s member unions have been seeking: stronger support throughout the competition pyramid, and better coordination with World Rugby to reduce friction when regional and global priorities diverge.
