On Nov. 16 Adidas Originals released its first capsule of blockchain-based virtual wearables – what it will henceforth call Virtual Gear – in the form of NFTs. All 16 of the collection’s items are, according to the brand, “designed to be worn by virtual avatars,” “accessible through a PFP dressing tool,” and “interoperable with other identity-based projects and worlds” – that is, usable in other metaverses.

Owners of the Adidas Originals Capsule NFT Collection, issued in May, will have the option to receive one of the 16 new items in their existing wallet. They may either “burn” their Capsule NFT to receive, in exchange, one of the 16 items at random or else list the option for others. Non-owners of an old capsule NFT may purchase an item from the new collection from an NFT marketplace.
Again, the new items are the first wearables, not the first NFTs, that Adidas has released. The Into the Metaverse series of NFTs was issued and reissued in 2021. These three outfits feature in the new capsule as well, each designed having designed one of the 16 items.
