Decathlon Germany announced it will officially join the Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE), the German Retail Federation, effective Jan. 1, 2026. The move aligns with the company’s broader efforts to engage more deeply in national retail policy and sustainability initiatives.
“We are pleased to join HDE and unite our efforts,” said Arnaud Sauret, CEO of Decathlon Germany. “HDE is a key advocate for the retail industry in Germany and across the EU, and we share many common goals that promise a productive partnership.”
HDE President Alexander von Preen welcomed the new member, noting Decathlon’s significance as one of the largest non-food and sporting goods retailers in the country. He added that the move follows a broader trend of strengthening the association’s voice, citing Rossmann’s membership earlier this year.

The cooperation will focus on three main areas:
- Urban Development: Both parties aim to support retail structures that align with consumer needs and vibrant city centers.
- Fair Competition: They plan to advocate for balanced market regulations in response to evolving retail dynamics.
- Sustainability and Circular Economy: The partnership will promote greener retail practices, including mobility solutions and circular business models.
Decathlon, headquartered in Plochingen, operates over 80 stores and employs more than 5,000 people in Germany. The global company operates 1,700 locations worldwide, using a workforce exceeding 100,000.
