The European Marathon Classics groups eight city races from Rome to Warsaw into a continent-wide participant challenge. The format – free to join, no time limit, customizable medal – reflects growing industry efforts to deepen community ties across mass-participation running.

The European Marathon Classics (EMC) series was officially launched on Feb. 25, 2026 in the historic setting of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. The new initiative brings together eight major continental marathons into a single challenge to celebrate shared European spirit and strengthen community ties. The EMC series consists of eight races held between March and October in Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, London, Copenhagen, Vienna, Warsaw, and Frankfurt.

Participants who complete at least five different marathons from the EMC list, each in a different city, earn the title of “European Marathon Classics Finisher” and receive a commemorative medal. There is no time limit for completing the five races. The medal, which will be awarded to participants upon completion of their fifth race in the series, was unveiled during the Vienna inauguration. The medal design features an area where runners can add magnetic collectible badges from each race. As runners complete the marathons, they create a personalized medal that reflects their personal journey.

The 2026 European Marathon Classics calendar includes:

  • · Acea Run Rome The Marathon – March, 22
  • · Vienna City Marathon – April, 19
  • · TCS London Marathon – April, 26
  • · Zurich Rock ’n’ Roll Running Series Madrid – April, 26
  • · Copenhagen Marathon – May, 10
  • · Warsaw Marathon – September, 27
  • · EDP Maratona de Lisboa – October, 10
  • · Mainova Frankfurt Marathon – October, 25

European Marathon Classics borrows the majors playbook

The European Marathon Classics (EMC) borrows from a familiar playbook in mass-participation running: bundle independent races under a shared banner to keep runners coming back and to sharpen sponsorship appeal. The template is the World Marathon Majors, the six-race circuit spanning Boston, Tokyo, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York, which has shown how a common identity can translate into repeat entries and stronger brand positioning.

The EMC applies the same logic on a regional scale, but with a lower bar for completion: participants need five finishes from eight races, and there is no time limit. That structure widens the pool of would-be finishers by reducing the pressure of a single-season chase.

For running brands, the series offers a single pan-European platform designed to drive engagement across multiple events. For host cities and organizers, the shared branding could extend cross-promotion beyond home markets and help attract entrants from abroad.
