OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, an artificial intelligence-powered web browser designed around its popular chatbot, directly challenging Google Chrome in the global browser market. The new platform allows users to interact with websites through natural-language commands and includes features such as summarizing content, comparing products and automating online tasks.

The launch follows reports by Reuters that OpenAI is aiming to build on its 800 million weekly active ChatGPT users by expanding into web browsing and search. In “agent mode,” available to paid subscribers, ChatGPT can complete end-to-end tasks such as researching trips or shopping online – capabilities that could redefine how users find and process information.

Currently available for Apple’s macOS, Atlas versions for Windows, iOS and Android are expected soon. Analysts told Reuters the move positions OpenAI to compete for digital advertising revenue traditionally dominated by Google, which still holds about 72 percent of the global browser market. Alphabet shares fell 1.8 percent following the announcement.
