The Japanese Olympics Minister, Tamayo Marukawa, has announced that the Tokyo-area venues for the upcoming Summer Olympics, both indoor and outdoor, will not admit spectators. As for the presence of spectators in other areas, the organizers will consider “concrete measures” with each local governor involved, Marukawa said. The announcement comes after Japan’s government said on July 8 that Tokyo would be under a virus state of emergency from July 12 to Aug. 22, due to rising infections in Tokyo and concerns over the increased prevalence of the Delta variant. The Olympics will open on July 23 and run through Aug. 8, falling entirely under the emergency period. The Paralympics will open on Aug. 24.
