Less than a year from the start of UEFA Euro 2024, scheduled to take place in Germany from June 14 to July 14 next year, the governing body has published the “UEFA Euro 2024 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Strategy.” The UEFA European Championship is the third-largest sporting event worldwide, and the next Euro 2024 tournament is meant to serve as “the reference for event sustainability in the world of sports and a driving force for sustainable development for German and European societies,” said UEFA. In 2021, UEFA and the German Football Association (DFB) presented an Event Social Responsibility Strategy. Since then, sustainability has grown as a key pillar in the event’s organization, said UEFA. This includes, for example, elaborating a match schedule that reduces travel distances for fans and teams between the host cities in the group stage. The new ESG strategy requires team transport by train or coach in Germany instead of flying and using low-emission team cars, buses and vans. Each team is indeed required to implement a plan to reduce its carbon impact. Also, to promote smart mobility, each match ticket holder will be able, for example, to use local public transport for 36 hours. The UEFA Euro 2024 ESG Strategy is available for download as a 36-page document from the UEFA website.
