The creator-led football format founded by Gerard Piqué is axing 41 of 125 Barcelona-based employees and pausing all European competition for six months as it overhauls its competition model. The redundancy process, filed under Spanish ERE procedures, affects 30 percent of the local workforce.
The Kings League, a seven-a-side football format launched in 2023 by former Barcelona player Gerard Piqué, has announced a collective redundancy process (ERE - Expediente de Regulación de Empleo) that will involve 30 percent of its workforce in Barcelona. The layoffs will affect 41 employees out of a workforce of 125 people, said the company. The Kings League has a staff of 230 workers worldwide.
The decision is associated with a redefinition of its competition model in Europe. No matches will be played over the next six months while the model is being revised, said the organization.
The Kings League is a creator-led football format that blends football, entertainment, and digital content, with gamified rules inspired by gaming. Teams are led by streamers, content creators, and renowned football figures. Since its launch, the project has expanded to six countries - Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Mexico and Brazil. Earlier this year, the Kings League raised $63 million in funding to accelerate global growth.
