The London Mayor would like to establish London as the global sports capital.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has expressed interest in launching a bid for the 2040 Olympics as part of a broader ambition to see the English capital as the world’s epicenter of sports. London previously hosted the Games in 1908, 1948 and 2012, and would become the first city to host the Olympics for the fourth time. Madrid and Munich are also reportedly interested in hosting the 2040 Games.

A recent report released by the mayor’s office, created by Think Beyond, reveals that the staging of six leading sports events in 2024 delivered a direct £230 million (€269.9m) boost to London’s economy and attracted 480,000 sports fans to the city. The events featured in the report include the UEFA Champions League Final at Wembley Stadium, the Major League Baseball (MLB) London Series at the London Stadium featuring the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, the Formula E London E-Prix at ExCeL London, the London Athletics Meet, two regular season NFL games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the Jacksonville Jaguars regular season NFL game at Wembley Stadium.
The English capital will host more major events this year, including the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup. London will also host games of the UEFA Euro 2028, as the tournament will be co-hosted by the UK and Ireland.
