Rottefella and Amer Sports has reached a landmark resolution. the companies have settled a prolonged patent dispute over movable binding systems for cross-country skis, culminating in a global licensing agreement. This agreement follows a decisive ruling by the Oslo District Court in favor of Rottefella, marking the second such victory for the company since 2023.

No impact on retail and pro athletes

The licensing deal safeguards Rottefella’s patents worldwide, allowing Atomic and Salomon products to continue using the contested technology for the upcoming 2024/2025 winter season. Retailers can sell their current inventories, and professional athletes can use these products without restrictions during competitions.

“It has been important for Rottefella and Amer Sports to find a solution that minimizes the impact on retailers and athletes,” commented Rottefella CEO Torstein Myklebostad. ”This agreement balances our patent rights with the needs of a sports industry already under pressure and athletes making final preparations for the season. We are pleased with this outcome.”

“This agreement underscores the importance of protecting years of innovation and substantial investment in new technology,” said Myklebostad, emphasizing the significance of this decision. The Oslo District Court had ruled that Atomic and Salomon’s Shift and Shift Race bindings infringed on Rottefella’s patented movable binding technology. This system, which integrates a mounting plate, binding and rail, enables seamless switching between configurations and compatibility with future products. Halvor Manshaus, Rottefella’s legal representative, said, “Reaching a mutual resolution was the most reasonable approach, ensuring fair competition and safeguarding investments.”

Amer Sports initiated settlement discussions to prevent further legal proceedings. The agreement includes a licensing fee to be paid by Amer Sports, alongside damages awarded by the court. Financial specifics remain confidential. Rottefella now focuses on its innovative SkateX system, designed exclusively for skate skiing. Myklebostad described it as “a game-changer” and anticipates it becoming the standard in the sport.
