Media reports have been suggesting that Adidas is about to ink a 10-year clothing deal worth £6.5 million (€7.3m-$8.6m) per year with Naomi Osaka, the tennis player who recently won the US Open in New York. The news was initially reported by The Times of London on Sept. 10, and could later be found in an array of international media sources. It would be the biggest deal ever from the German brand to be offered to a female athlete. However, later reports in The Japanese Times, on Sept. 25, have suggested that rumors about that deal are untrue, and that other companies could be in the picture for the player, including Uniqlo and Nike. Uniqlo sponsors Kei Nishikori, the first Japanese to reach a Grand Slam singles final at the 2014 US Open, which he lost to Marin ?ili?. In July, Roger Federer ended his long-standing relationship with Nike to sign a 10-year deal with Uniqlo. Osaka defeated Serena Williams in the women's final at Flushing Meadows on Sept. 8, making her the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title. Osaka, who is 20 years old, was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and a Haitian father, and plays under the flag of Japan. She is already endorsed by Adidas, but her contract is due to expire at the end of this year.
