Intersport Deutschland is planning to add 100 new own-branded stores across the country over the next six years, the Financial Times has reported. This would bring the number of outlets it operates in the country to 500. The expansion plan will reportedly target medium-sized cities like Wiesbaden, Trier and Hanau, where the retailer is not yet present. According to the company, Intersport is Germany’s largest sports retailer, controlling a third of the German market.
Founded in 1956, Intersport Deutschland operates as a co-operative with 200 independent member sports retailers operating under its brand. It supplies 500 independent retailers who operate under their own names.
Intersport Deutschland is also the single largest member of Swiss-based Intersport International Corporation (IIC), which operates in 42 countries. Last year, IIC generated €13.7 billion in revenues. In the same period, Intersport Deutschland reported a 5.7 percent increase in sales to €3.5 billion, with online sales up 21 percent.
In November last year, Intersport Deutschland sold Voswinkel, a sporting goods retail chain with 50 branches across Germany, to Italian sports retailer Cisalfa.
