Nike is gearing up to introduce its first Jordan Brand concept store in the US, with Philadelphia set to host the “World of Flight” theme. The project, revealed through documents submitted to the Philadelphia Historical Commission, involves the transformation of a 1921, 7,000 square foot building into a destination for sneaker and apparel enthusiasts.
Located at 1617 Walnut St. in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, the store will join a vibrant array of fashion and footwear retailers near City Hall. Architect Michael Kouvaris outlined the design intent in a letter to the city, emphasizing the preservation of the building’s original character while integrating modern updates for enhanced functionality.
Central to the design is a portal motif, symbolizing the transition from the outside world into the realm of flight. The concept blends historical references with contemporary retail needs, ensuring a seamless integration of the brand’s heritage with cutting-edge shopping experiences.
Early renderings reveal subtle yet impactful modifications that honor the building’s architectural legacy while preparing it for 21st-century retail.
Other World of Flight stores already exist in Italy, Japan and Dubai.
