The Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games LA28 has revised and published the master plan for the venues. Almost all disciplines will take place in the greater Los Angeles area – with the exception of the canoe and softball competitions, which will be held in Oklahoma City.
Overview of the LA28 master schedule of venues, including the latest updates:
- Gymnastics will take place at the recently renovated Downtown LA Arena, home to the National Basketball Association’s Lakers, the National Hockey League’s Kings and the Women’s NBA’s Sparks.
- Basketball will be played in the country’s newest and most modern indoor arena in Inglewood, which will be home to the NBA’s Clippers.
- The country’s newest and most modern major professional sports stadium in Inglewood, home to the National Football League’s Rams and Chargers, will be the largest indoor swimming arena in Olympic history with 38,000 seats.
- Track and field and para-athletics will remain at the legendary and recently renovated Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, making it the only stadium in history to host track and field events at three Olympic Games.
(To accommodate these moves, both World Athletics and World Aquatics, the governing bodies of Olympic track and field and aquatics competitions, respectively, have approved and support LA28’s plan to adjust the traditional Olympic schedule. Specifically, the athletics events will be moved to the first week of the LA28 Olympic Games, while the swimming events will take place in the second week).
- LA28’s plans for the opening and closing ceremonies remain unchanged and will be held at both the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Inglewood Stadium.
- The San Fernando Valley will be the hub for BMX Freestyle and BMX Racing, as well as Skateboarding Parks and Street, all of which will take place in the Sepulveda Basin area.
- Archery will also take place in the Sepulveda Basin area for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
- Diving will return to the same pool that hosted the aquatics competitions at the 1932 Olympics, the 1932 Pool at Exposition Park, which will be preserved for the Angelenos as part of the city’s Recreation and Parks Department.
- The City of Long Beach will host the artistic swimming and para-swimming competitions, in addition to several other sports that will be announced at a later date.
- The equestrian and para-equestrian competitions, previously held at Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, will be held at an existing facility in Temecula – the only facility of its kind in Southern California large enough to accommodate all required disciplines in one location.
- The shooting and para-sport competitions, which were also previously held at Sepulveda Dam Recreation Area, will be assigned to one of two yet-to-be-determined shooting clubs in the Southern California region.

Necessary relocation of two sports to avoid building new facilities
Southern California has more sports venues for professional and collegiate sports than any other area in the US, but there is no canoe slalom site in the region (or anywhere in the western US), and the largest softball site in Southern California holds fewer than 2,000 spectators, which does not match the expected spectator demand for softball at the Olympics. Rather than build temporary venues for these sports, and in keeping with the IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendation that encourages the use of existing stadiums outside of the host region, LA28 will allocate the canoe slalom and softball competitions to existing sports venues in Oklahoma City (1,900 km away). Both the canoe slalom and softball stadiums in Oklahoma City are built to international competition standards, and the local community has consistently supported top tournaments for both sports, ensuring a quality experience for athletes and fans while providing LA28 with cost savings and revenue gains to support its balanced budget.
“The Olympic and Paralympic Games represent the pinnacle of athletic competition and achievement, and we’re proud to host the Los Angeles 2028 Games in some of the greatest stadiums and arenas ever built,” commented LA28 Chairman Casey Wasserman. One of the main goals of the updated venue plan is to utilize existing infrastructure to reduce the need for temporary structures and improve long-term opportunities for communities. Many of these venues will remain available to the community long after the Games, providing opportunities for future sporting events and activities.
Additional changes to the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games Masterplan that do not result in the relocation of events outside the city boundaries, venues for new sports and disciplines added to the Olympic and Paralympic sports program since 2017 and the updated Paralympic Venue Plan will be announced at a later date.
The LA28 Olympic Games are scheduled to take place from July 14 to 30, 2028, followed by the Paralympic Games, which will be held from Aug. 15 to 27.
