The organizers of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games have unveiled a comprehensive Impact and Sustainability Plan for the Games. To minimize environmental impact, LA28 will prioritize clean energy and transportation, purchasing 100 percent renewable electricity for its venues. In addition, LA28 will utilize existing venues and prioritize reuse of the Games’ temporary infrastructure. At least 90 percent of materials used for temporary infrastructure and overlay at competition venues will be reused or recycled. In contrast, equipment and materials used at the Games will be redistributed locally through a community donation program.
The LA28 Impact and Sustainability Plan is guided by four key principles: radical reuse, inclusivity, community benefit and resilience. These priorities were shaped through a two-year consultation process with external working groups – civil society organizations, labor representatives, academics and civic leaders – on sustainability, workforce development and community business.
One of the most distinctive initiatives is Resilient by Nature. This program will deploy a range of tools (grantmaking, volunteerism, educational campaigns) to pursue positive impacts across three focus areas: wildfire resilience and nature restoration, ocean protection and cooling solutions. Within the Resilient by Nature framework, LA28 will launch a Community Resilience Fund by early 2026, providing grants to local non-profits to support projects across the three focus areas.
Another distinctive initiative is the PlayLA program, a $160 million investment co-founded by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and LA28. This is the single most significant commitment to youth sports development in California history, according to LA28. PlayLA is designed to help make youth sport affordable and accessible. The program is creating opportunities for children and young people of all abilities to ensure a powerful social legacy well before the Games begin.
LA28 has also launched a community business supplier program, designed to engage local and small businesses. Through this program, LA28 is committing to 75 percent local and 25 percent small business spend targets.
