Garmin has paired the release of two smartwatches – the Fenix 6 Solar and the Surf Edition of the Instinct Solar – with the inauguration of a partnership with Surfline Sessions of Huntington Beach, California. Garmin’s wearable devices measure wave count, top speed, distance surfed and total water time. The connection with Surfline adds video footage of wave rides. Surfers need only press start on their watch and surf at their leisure within view of a Surfline camera. A video clip of each ride will quickly appear in the Surfline app on their smartphone. Surfline has set up HD cameras at some 600 surf spots throughout the world. With these, a 35-year dataset, “proprietary swell modeling” and a team of meteorologists and scientists, the company provides surf forecasts and a variety of other subscription services – some of them under the Magicseaweed, Coastalwatch, Buoyweather and Fishtrack brands.
