Nike Inc./Nike Direct is the largest sports retailer in the world, according to the “Global Powers of Retailing 2023” report, which Deloitte has just released. Decathlon takes the 2nd spot, followed by Dick’s, JD Sports and Adidas, to complete the Top 5 in the sports retailing sub-category. The Top 250 companies in the Global Powers of Retailing 2023 report were ranked according to their fiscal year 2021 (FY2021) retail revenue in US dollars.

In the overall ranking of the world’s Top 250 global retailers, Nike occupies the 59th spot, while Decathlon ranks 75th, Dick’s takes the 100th spot, JD Sports ranks 107th, and Adidas 121st. The other sports retailers in the 250 global retail leaders are: Foot Locker (129th), Academy Sports & Outdoors (174th), Frasers Group – formerly Sports Direct International (195th), and Lululemon Athletica (196th).

The overall global ranking is led for a second consecutive year, in terms of retail revenues, by Walmart. Interestingly, seven companies in the world’s Top 10 (namely, 70 percent) are based in the U.S. Besides Walmart (U.S.), Amazon (U.S.) ranks at the 2nd spot, followed by Costco Wholesale Corp. (U.S.), Schwarz Group (Germany), The Home Depot (U.S.), The Kroger Co. (U.S.), JD.com (China), Walgreens Boots Alliance (U.S.), Aldi (Germany), and Target Corp. (U.S.) at the 10th spot.

No new retailers entered the Top 10 rankings in FY2021. In terms of annual retail revenue growth, JD.com was the fastest-growing Top 10 retailer in 2021, with revenues jumping by 25.1 percent.

Carrefour was excluded from this year’s report at the company’s request. EssilorLuxottica was excluded from this year’s report due to an absence of available data in the fiscal year 2021.
