Barbara Martin Coppola is leaving after three years.

After three years at the helm of the world’s biggest sports retailer, CEO Barbara Martin Coppola has stepped down at Decathlon. She took the helm, as we reported, in mid-March 2022.

Under Coppola’s leadership, the company says, Decathlon continued to grow within a difficult context while achieving a significant 13 percent reduction in CO2 emissions since 2021, thanks to the substantial development of circular models, the use of decarbonized materials and cleaner energy.

Under her leadership the company also modified its brand identity and sought to bring greater immersion to its customer experience, both in stores and in e-commerce. The latter now accounts for 20 percent of the Group’s revenue. Over the past three years, Decathlon has also refocused its brand portfolio and expanded its collaborations with international athletes and global sports competitions, including the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, in Paris, for whose 45,000 volunteers the company designed outfits.

Learn more about the Decathlon plans in the long-read SGI Europe published in Sept 2024.

Coppola’s replacement is Javier López, who is already at his post. López has been with the company for 26 years and held numerous positions in digital, logistics and retail. He headed Decathlon Germany from 2012 to 2015, served as CEO of Decathlon Spain from 2015 to 2022 and became Global Chief Value Chain Officer in 2022.

This is not the only change in Decathlon’s management over the past month. Julien Leclercq was appointed Chairman of the Board on Feb. 25.
